Extreme Couponing Is It Really Worth Your Time?

I’ve written several articles reviewing TLC’s show, “Extreme Couponing”.  I’ve even written a few “Reality Check” articles about my experiences and tips using coupons.  This past week highlighted a woman from the Toledo, Ohio area and the Kroger store she shops at only doubles coupons up to $0.50.  That really got me thinking:  If Joni can save more than $3,000, I should be able to do better! No, not better than $3,000, I’m no guru, but better than I have done.

I do have to give myself a small disclaimer:  She did spend over $1,000 on yogurt and cat food by purchasing 570 yogurts and 300 boxes of cat food in her mega charity shopping trip.  The nearly $400 spent on yogurt netted her over $67 in free money by way of catelinas the register spit out at her.

Now, with the goal in mind: buy things you would use and spend as little as possible, I headed off to Meijer and then Kroger’s, both of which were in Findlay, Ohio and both offer doubling coupons up to 50¢.

The Kroger trip was just for a few specific things.  Well, actually it was for two specific things, but I got a little more.  The trip was for toilet paper and pineapple, both which were on sale.  This trip ended up with a 54% savings.

The Quilted Northern double rolls were normally $7.99, but on sale for $5.99.  On their website I signed up for an e-coupon and the discount goes right onto my shopping card.  The e-coupon for this item was $2.00 bringing the tp down to $3.99.

Originally the make-up for my daughter was $5.69 and the store had it on sale for 20% off.  I had a $1.00 off coupon so that packet of blush was now $3.55 plus tax.

The store had pasta pouches 10/$10.  I had gotten two e-coupons for this product of 25¢  each and a paper coupon for 50¢ /2 packages, which was doubled.  Therefore, the pouches of pasta cost 25¢  each.

There was a closeout on Suave deoderant that left them priced $1.06 each, but after taking off the 75¢  coupon, that left each one with a cost of 31¢  plus tax.  I had four coupons so I got four deoderant.

I also bought four pineapple that were priced $1 each and a couple packs of donuts that were on sale.

The Meijer’s trip was more expensive, but then I was doing more shopping there.  I had never shopped at this store before so I had no feel for the layout, nor the general prices.  Overall, I felt most of the prices were higher than Krogers, but I would definitely come here for cleaning supplies and any advertised sales.

The coupons I did use here were really good, but unfortunately, I also got overcharged on some things, and didn’t realize it till I got home.  Namely, the bread products were either over charged or the items were on the wrong shelves (or I simply read the price labels wrong).  One loaf of bread rang up at $3.39.  I thought this came from a sale shelf.  Then a pack of buns I thought I picked up for $1, rang up as $1.99.  I had a 55¢  coupon for the buns, but getting them for that price is ridiculous as far as I’m concerned!!

The better buys were picking up Resolve Stain Remover on sale for $2.50.  My coupon was doubled to make it $1 off, plus the cashier let me use the coupon that was stuck to the bottle giving me another buck off.  I asked her outright if it would work and she said it would.  However, when I went back into the store to pick up four more bottles, hoping for a similar deal, the self-scan cashier wouldn’t over ride it and the original cashier had a long line.  Lesson learned: next time grab them all the first time.  Putting them at the end of your stuff on the conveyor belt will make it easy for the cashier to delete from your receipt if the need arises.

We also picked up hot dogs which were on sale for $1 a pack to go with internet printed coupons for $1/2 packs making each package of weinies cost 50¢.  Wishbone salad dressing was on sale 3/$5 or $1.67 each.  Using a $1 off per bottle brought the price down to 67¢  each.  Because we have several salad eaters and I use italian dressing to marinate meat, I was pretty excited.  We picked up some gum 3/$3 with a $1 off coupon.  There was also a splurge of candy bars, buy 2, get 1 free.  There were a few other coupons here and there.  My overall coupons for that trip to Meijer was $18.38.  The only thing I got that I wouldn’t normally get was the candy bars and one of them was a reward for the kid who went with me to the store for this time consuming trip.  Because I wasn’t familiar with the store and was doing math looking for the best deals, this trip took longer than I expected.

I think the thing I was most disappointed about was the Meijer ad.  On the front page they advertised their 10/$10 deal.  On it was frozen pizzas and pizza rolls.  The pizza rolls and the pizzas were two different brands and I didn’t realize that until I got there and was trying to figure out why the pizzas weren’t on sale.  That brand was the pizza rolls.  The coupon I had was not for the pizzas on sale, so back into the binder they went!  Yes, they were only the difference of 25¢ cost per pizza, but I knew they’d come on sale eventually.

These attempts at sharing my “mini” couponing efforts are in no way meant to be bragging.  I put these out there as a way to show you that your efforts at clipping, saving, and organizing your coupons can be worthwhile with minimal time and effort.  If you’re willing to invest three hours per week you can easily save a little money.

Yesterday I went into Rite Aid to pick up some OTC medicine and a paper.  In the paper was a coupon for $4 off Claritin D.  After doing some quick math comparing the various products, I determined that it was a good deal, cut out the coupon, paid for the paper and the medicine, and was on my way.  That more than paid for my $1.75 newspaper so any coupons that were in there to be used later had already made the paper a good buy.

Trust me, I am NOT an organized person by nature.  In face, I still need to put dividers in my binder to make it more useful.  I also need to divide the categories up more to make it easier to find the coupons I need, versus flipping back and forth, but it can be done.  You can do it.  Warning: Once you start you will quickly find yourself carrying your binder whenever you leave the house, much like a purse or a wallet.  You MAY make an unexpected stop at Arby’s and would want to use that b1g1 pop coupon you have tucked inside it.  While cruising to the library you may realize you need some toilet paper and you’ll find you just can’t justify buying tp unless it’s with a coupon or on sale.  On the way home from work you may stop in for some dinner fixings, and realize that you have a coupon for most of the ingredients!  Bonus!! Your hard earned money just got stretched farther.

That’s the game: stretch your money as far as you can so you can use it on things other than groceries.

Extreme Couponing Without The Extreme Part

I have become a serious earful about extreme couponing in recent days. Some samples from my mailbox:

"Please let me know how you can learn extreme couponing as quickly as possible. I have to learn and obtain began at this time because cash is tight."

"A lady during my area is teaching a serious couponing class for $54. I've no clue what she shows until I spend the money for money. Could it be worthwhile?Inch

"I purchased an e-book that guaranteed I'd learn extreme couponing. I compensated to download and print their information. It had been 23 double-spread pages which should have fit on five bits of paper. It essentially stated clip coupons and drive them towards the store. No helpful information whatsoever. Such a scam."

There is no quarrelling that coupons really are a hot subject. I received a lot more than 10,000 emails recently from people basically asking exactly the same questions: How do i learn how to save with coupons?

Regrettably, websites and training courses are appearing throughout promising to train the "strategies of Extreme Couponing," usually for any hefty fee. But you will find no tips for using coupons, definitely not ones anybody should pay considerable amounts of cash for. Previously couple of days, I have talked about a few of the distortions on display within the outsize shopping outings lionized about the Television show "Extreme Couponing." Using large amounts of coupons to buy any random low-listed item in the supermarket can equal to a remarkable shopping %u2026 that anybody can perform. The greater modest goal on most coupon consumers, however, would be to cut their groceries consistently every week. Using coupons sensibly, you will have great days that you take many items home free and days in which you may spend near to that which you did before. But for your money, you will also buy bigger amounts of products, creating a stockpile to last before next great purchase.

How do we start? Start by determining your goals. Getting everything free is, regrettably, not realistic. Reducing your grocery bill by typically 50 to 70 % every week? This can be a better, achievable goal. Here are a few other goals of mine: To not spend several hour per week planning for a shopping. To not devote a whole lot of living area to housing my grocery stockpile. I keep plastic shelving models during my basement to keep my stockpile. I do not devote a whole room to my stockpile, as some "Extreme Couponing" consumers did.

During my weekly column, I have shared many techniques needed in order to save considerably using coupons. Find out about the constantly rotating cost cycles inside your store. Recognize low purchase prices if you notice them. Suit your greatest-value coupons to individuals "best" sales.

Stocking up moderately is essential, too. If pasta sauce regularly costs $2.99 but now it's on purchase for 99 cents, good sense informs you that you're ready to buy several jar. Even with no coupons, purchasing three can cost you $2.97. You'll pay about what you will have taken care of one jar, however, you collect three!

Anybody can learn and employ these concepts. I have lengthy stated will be able to train this to anybody within an hour. That belief can also be what brought me to produce my number of free Super-Couponing training courses which column. Getting a skilled shopper explain everything in ways that's fun and clear to see could be instrumental in finding out how to save large with coupons. The strategy you learn you should use forever.

I train couponing as frequently as you possibly can and also the audiences appear to obtain bigger each day. I continue being devoted to helping others learn how to cut their groceries with coupons. People should not need to pay absurd sums of cash to learn to cut costs.

Extreme Couponing Episode 11

Serious savings centered the airwaves when Extreme Couponing 2011 episode 11 broadcast June 8 on TLC. The latest edition from the curious reality show profiled hardcore consumers Joni Meyer-Crothers and Angelique Campbell, two gals who've spent the greater area of the past couple of years gathering truly spectacular home stockpiles. Wondering the way they made it happen and the way much each spent--or did not spend--throughout their large shopping outings? Here is a look to their world.

First of all was Ohio's Joni Meyer-Crothers, a mom of seven who balks at having to pay even 20 cents to have an item because she's certain that nearly anything could be become free of charge. Since she started couponing 3 years ago, Joni has contributed $100,000 price of food to charitable organisation, and it has accumulated a remarkable $20,000 multi-room stockpile that feeds not just her very own family, but buddies too. Her grown children treat the stockpile like a small-mart, and Joni keeps the products carefully organized.

To organize on her shopping outings, Joni purchases just one newspaper, after which scours the card inserts for top deals and orders copies of individuals coupons in large quantities from clipping services. When she hit the shop on her Extreme Couponingrun, she wished just to walk by helping cover their $3,100 in groceries for under $100 up front. After an tiring six hrs within the store, Joni headed towards the checkout lane and separated her enormous haul into eight separate transactions to be able to maximize the amount of Catalina register coupons that she'd receive.

In the end from the products were scanned and also the coupons totalled, Joni spent just $45.73 for groceries that retailed for $3,159.30. Incorporated in her own haul were 400 boxes of cat food for any local shelter, 310 boxes of noodles, and 540 glasses of yogurt. Joni completed her segment on the program by observing that because of the accessibility to coupons, there is no excuse for anybody going hungry--"As we can perform it, anybody can."

Joni might have become a sweet deal, however the second shopper profiled on Extreme Couponing 2011 episode 11 obtained a much more impressive haul. Washington's Angelique Campbell, a gymnastics coach who states be "deeply in love with coupons," calls couponing her hobby and stays considerable time considering it. 2 yrs dedicated to the craft have led to a $15,000 stockpile in her own garage. Angelique described that she was raised poor and resented shopping because investing money was undesirable, but couponing transformed her perspective.

To organize for large outings, Angelique stays up late, hunting local online blogs available and deal information. Despite working lengthy hrs, she also finds time to search for added coupon card inserts via rubbish diving.

She and her entire family, including her husband and three kids, hit the supermarket for his or her Extreme Couponing shopping, wishing to invest under $50 for $2,000 in necessary goods and lengthy-term, shelf-stable products to increase Angelique's stockpile. An hour or so in to the trip, she dropped her two more youthful children off in the in-store childcare, and handle in the trip by using her older daughter and her husband.

In the register, she's tossed for any momentary look once the cashier requested that she separate her enormous order into three separate transactions to be able to keep your register from crashes, but she drawn it together and things went as she'd wished. Ultimately, the household walked from the store with $2,123.56 in groceries without having to pay a cent. Actually, Angelique playing a $57.51 gift certificate because the store ended up owing her money. Her haul incorporated 600 packages of chocolate, 134 boxes of couscous--which she'd never even attempted before--and 93 bottles of hot sauce.

What exactly will next week's season finale of Extreme Couponing 2011 bring? Stay tuned to TLC on Wednesday and discover.

Coupons.com raises $200M to grow digital coupon market

Digital coupon provider Coupons.com Corporation. has brought $200 million from undisclosed institutional traders, which makes it the most recent Internet company to draw in significant attention in the investor community.
Coupons.com introduced the offer Thursday but wouldn't disclose the business's total valuation. An individual near to the matter who wasn't approved to talk openly stated an investment brings the business's value to $1 billion.
That valuation suggests the brand new traders holds about one-fifth of Coupons.com.

The organization, located in Mountain View, Calif., stated an investment comes mainly from mutual funds and didn't include contributions from investment capital traders or private equity investors. Coupons.com didn't title the funds involved.
Coupons.com distributes coupons to customers through a number of digital formats, including in-store kiosks, mobile programs and 1000's of web sites. The organization, founded 13 years back, is continuing to grow as customers, producers and merchants get off using newspapers for coupons toward digital formats.

Coupon use overall, after many years of decline, started to improve once the recession hit in 2008.
"Frugal may be the new black," stated Steven Boal, Boss of Coupons.com. "As customers are searching for savings and deals as part of your before, Coupons.com is growing the coupons and promotions market, by permitting more brands for connecting with increased customers at each touch-way digital landscape."

Digital coupons rose from 1.1 % of coupons redeemed in 2006 to 10 % last year. Newspaper coupons fell from 63 percent of coupons redeemed to 50 % throughout exactly the same period, based on the organization.
"As newspaper audience is constantly on the decline and much more customers are searching online for savings, digital coupons are attaining significant momentum," Boal stated.
The organization plans to utilise to $100 million from the new investment to purchase shares back from employees and early traders. It'll invest the remaining to construct the company, including implementing new tools to achieve customers. Additionally, it intends to add 100 individuals to its 300-person staff throughout the following six several weeks and open offices in Chicago, La and New You are able to.
Coupons.com, which already offers coupons in 12 European nations through its stake within the U.K.'s Couponstar Ltd., stated additionally, it intends to expand its worldwide business.
It is just one of several Internet companies to win the investor spotlight lately.

LinkedIn Corp., a well known Online sites for professional networking, started things off in May by having an initial public offering by which shares bending in the very first day of buying and selling. Discount provider Groupon Corporation. seems headed because of its own IPO after filing regulating papers earlier this year. And Gilt Groupe Corporation., a web-based store of luxury goods, elevated $138 million from traders this month, getting its total value to $1 billion despite not getting switched an income
It has stirred some debate whether a good investment bubble is developing around promising but misguided Internet companies. But Boal stated companies which are being funded lately tend to be more financially seem than individuals that wound up failing following the us dot.com boom. And that he claims that Coupons.com's deal is also not the same as many more nowadays.

"We now have elevated the cash to satisfy the demand, versus raising money to produce demand," Boal stated.
Customers are asking these phones proceed faster which funding will allow it to do this, Boal stated.
Coupons.com has always had a choice of a preliminary public offering which financing does not change that, he stated. While you will find no immediate plans to have an IPO, he stated that continues to be a choice.
